Rachel Brooks
Painting
Rachel Brooks works with illusory and atmospheric space, creating heavy edged, uneven forms which appear to slide off her canvases.
She combines the use of a palette knife with fingertips swirling repeatedly into the paint: smaller concentrated motions increase the illusory space while larger sweeping marks work to lighten and flatten the space. The works can be read from a number of vantage points what is one large block of colour from a distance becomes a subtly variegated, meditative pattern on closer inspection.
Recent paintings have moved towards abstract colour works with oil on Perspex and copper edging.
Rachel Brooks holds a bachelor of media arts degree in Painting with honours and currently paints from her studio in Taupo Bay.
