Located in the heart of historic Rawene, No 1 Parnell Gallery offers a rich, multi-sensory experience that blends art, heritage, literature, fashion, and hospitality. Housed in a lovingly restored late-1800s building; once the Andrewes family general store; the space retains much of its original charm, including timber floors and layout features that echo its storied past.
The gallery comprises two exhibition spaces: the Street Front Gallery, currently featuring the work of Helen Beech, and the Main Gallery, which presents a wide selection of original contemporary and affordable artworks by emerging and established artists from across Aotearoa. Visitors will find an inspiring range of painting, jewellery, ceramics, mixed media, and sculpture.
Helen Beech, a Kawakawa-based artist and part-time teacher, draws deep inspiration from the landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand. Her work reflects a heartfelt connection to nature; birds, trees, and terrain; translated into emotive visual experiences. Through her practice, she encourages a renewed appreciation of the natural world, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with their own memories and sense of place.
Beyond the gallery, visitors can enjoy a coffee in the New Era Café while watching the comings and goings of the Hokianga ferry, browse a curated selection of books by local Hokianga writers, and explore Elena Pia’s Fashion Boutique, offering designer womenswear and naturally made New Zealand skincare.
