Jean Rankin is a Kerikeri-based artist whose work is infused with depth, expression, and a touch of playful honesty. Her art aims to captivate viewers through a mix of techniques and emotional resonance; inviting reflection and stirring feeling with each piece.
Four years ago, Jean traded the busy beaches of Orewa for the subtropical calm of Kerikeri. With her children grown and gone, she embraced a new creative chapter, picking up a paintbrush and diving into the world of art. Under the guidance of artist Di West, Jean learned to let go of convention; discovering that trees aren’t always green, and skies don’t have to be blue. She also joined the Paihia Art Group, where painting is paired with camaraderie, tea, and the occasional wonky still life.
Just as she found her rhythm, the “empty nest” refilled with children returning, grandkids in tow, and her studio becoming a joyful mess of toy trucks and glitter glue. While her painting time now shares space with peanut butter and playtime, Jean embraces the chaos. Her art reflects life itself: messy, colourful, expressive, and a little abstract.
