Lindsay Antrobus Evans is a highly respected mixed media sculptor who has lived in Kohukohu, Hokianga since 1992. His colourful and often challenging life, from suburban Sydney and a vocation in a religious order, to the far north of Aotearoa, has reunited him with his original calling - sculpture.
This journey, from monk to passionate practising artist, has been guided by a single thread present since childhood. Lindsay refers to it as “a certain sinister perception”, a lens through which his work has been both shaped and revealed. His KOAST exhibition explores this thread, exposing the deeply personal content embedded in his sculptures.
Alongside his solo work, Lindsay collaborates with carver and painter Liz McAuliffe under the name Formed Function. Together, they create porcelain pieces that combine design, botanical inspiration, and a unique interplay of form and function. Their works are intentionally manipulated to highlight natural “imperfections,” offering a tactile and visual experience that is both art and utility.
Lindsay Evans will be exhibiting at Little Black Gallery as part of Rhythms of the North — a curated exhibition celebrating KOAST – Tai Tokerau Art Trail and the talent of Northland artists.
